Two days ago a 12 year old boy from Romania committed suicide because his mom was about to leave him and his brother& sister to go and work in Italy. He left a good bye note:

“I am sorry to depart from you on odd terms. With my funeral you should have no problems because the man will come to pay you for the wood. Sis, you stay in school. Mom, you take care of yourself, ’cause people are mean. Take care of the dog.”

Today The Soros Foundation published a research about the effects of migration on children left at home in Romania. 70,000 children between ages 11 and 14 have at least one parent that went to work in a foreign country. They found “a significant association between the absence of both parents or just of the mother and the frequency of depression symptoms in children”.

Isn’t this ironic? So ironic that it hurts.
