I have friends that are catholic and while I was in school in Romania I met many catholics but I never heard of Ash Wednesday until yesterday. While minding my own business in campus I came across all this people with ashes imposed on their foreheads. The first mark that I saw resembled the Hindu tilaka but the person wearing it was of English origins…I was really confused.

ashes(from wikipedia)

Eventually I found in this special day, the Catholics start the Great lent and they show their belief by wearing an ash crossed on their foreheads. While applying the ash the priest is saying : “Remember, O man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.
We still have a long way until we start our orthodox lent but is a good reminder that we need to get ready for Pascha.
